SVALBARD – SKI MOUNTAINEERING NORDENSKIÖLDLAND & VAN MIJENFJORD

The Svalbard Archipelago, in the heart of the Arctic Ocean, embodies the essence of wild, extreme nature — a world made only of snow, ice, light, and silence.

Our adventure begins in Longyearbyen, the northernmost settlement on Earth. From here, we’ll set off by snowmobile to reach an isolated and welcoming cabin — heated, equipped with beds and kitchen, but without running water. To cook and wash, we’ll melt snow, just like true Arctic explorers.

Each day, we will set out for a ski touring excursion: some routes will start directly from the cabin, others will require short snowmobile transfers to reach more remote valleys. Participants will drive their own snowmobiles (easy to handle and on short routes), always under the supervision of an experienced Arctic Mountain Guide.

This is a true adventure — a full immersion in raw nature, surrounded by glacial valleys, suspended icefields and solitary ridges. And with a bit of luck, we might even catch sight of the legendary polar bear, undisputed ruler of these frozen lands.

Detailed Programme

Day 1 – Arrival in Longyearbyen -
Flight from Milan and arrival in Longyearbyen. Accommodation in hostel or apartment, introductory briefing with the guide and preparation for the expedition.

Day 2 – Snowmobile transfer to Nordenskiöldland -
Spectacular Arctic transfer by snowmobile across frozen valleys and fjords. Arrival at the Krekling cabin, our base for the next few days. First contact with the Arctic environment and short warm-up ski tour.

Day 3 – First ski tour from the cabin -
Introductory tour on routes surrounding the base, to get used to the snow conditions and terrain. Perfect to evaluate the group and adapt to the environment.

Day 4 – Exploring the slopes of Van Mijenfjord -
Ski tour towards the ridges overlooking the majestic Van Mijenfjord. Stunning landscapes and the chance to encounter Arctic wildlife.

Day 5 – Snowmobile traverse + ski in remote area -
Long transfer by snowmobile to reach the Slettebu cabin, our new base for the following days.

Day 6 – Technical or high-level tour (depending on weather) -
Choice between a panoramic or more demanding ski tour, depending on conditions. Immersive experience in pure wilderness and breathtaking views.

Day 7 – Final ski tour and return to Longyearbyen -
Final, symbolic ski tour before heading back by snowmobile to Longyearbyen. Overnight stay and free evening in town.

Day 8 – Cultural day in Longyearbyen -
Free day to explore local museums dedicated to mining history, polar exploration and Arctic wildlife.

Day 9 – Return to Italy
 - Return flight to Milan. End of the adventure.
